In the seven years since the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters or Polar Code entered into force, considerable experience has been gained. This article looks at some of the challenges and gaps in the Polar Code that have been identified and concludes with recommendations that should lead to further improvements in shipping safety and environmental protection in the Southern Ocean.
